Can You Take a Vape on a Plane? UK Travel Rules Explained
Jetting off on holiday or travelling for business? If you are a vaper, one of the most critical questions you need to answer before packing your bags is: "Can you take a vape on a plane?"
The short answer is yes, you can absolutely travel with your e-cigarette. However, because vapes contain lithium batteries and liquids, they are subject to very strict international aviation safety laws. Bringing your device on board incorrectly could result in it being confiscated at airport security—or worse, a hefty fine.
To ensure your journey starts smoothly, here is everything you need to know about flying with your vape from the UK.
1. Hand Luggage vs. Checked Bags: The Golden Rule
This is the most important rule set by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and airlines worldwide: Your vape device and all spare batteries must go in your carry-on hand luggage or on your person. They are strictly forbidden in your checked suitcase (hold luggage).
-
Why? Vapes run on lithium-ion batteries. In incredibly rare cases, these batteries can short-circuit or overheat. If this happens in the passenger cabin, the flight crew can handle it immediately. If it happens deep inside the cargo hold, it is a severe fire hazard.
-
Top Travel Tip: If your hand luggage is unexpectedly taken from you at the boarding gate because the overhead cabins are full, you must open your bag and remove your vape before they put your suitcase in the hold.
2. Packing Your E-Liquids and Pods
Vape liquids, pre-filled pods, and replacement cartridges are subject to standard airport security rules for liquids:
-
The 100ml Rule: Any e-liquid bottle or pod you bring in your hand luggage must be 100ml or under. Since standard UK nicotine e-liquids are capped at 10ml, they easily comply.
-
The Clear Liquid Bag: All your liquid refills and pods must fit comfortably inside a single, transparent, resealable 1-litre plastic bag alongside your other toiletries (like toothpaste and perfume).
-
Travelling with bulk liquid? If you are bringing extra packs of e-liquids for a long holiday, you can pack large quantities in your checked hold luggage, as long as they are sealed tightly.
Beware of Altitude Leaks!
The air pressure changes inside an airplane cabin during a flight cause air pockets to expand. In standard "open" vape tanks, this pressure forces the liquid out through the airflow holes, leaving you with a sticky mess in your pocket.
To avoid this, travel with a closed system. The pre-filled pods in our Ezee Pod System and the cartridges in our Ezee Cigalike are hermetically sealed, drastically reducing the risk of leakage at 30,000 feet.
3. Vaping Onboard and at the Airport
Using your e-cigarette on an airplane is a criminal offence.
-
On the plane: You cannot vape under any circumstances while onboard—this includes the airplane toilets. Airplane smoke detectors are incredibly sensitive and will easily pick up vape vapor, leading to severe fines, being banned from the airline, or even arrest upon landing.
-
No Charging: You are also strictly prohibited from charging your vape device via the plane's USB ports or using portable power banks during the flight.
-
At the terminal: You cannot vape inside UK airport terminals unless you are within a clearly designated, signposted smoking area (which are usually located outside before you pass security).
4. Check the Laws of Your Destination Country
While vaping is widely accepted as a smoking cessation tool in the UK and Europe, it is not legal everywhere. Before you fly, research your destination's local vape laws.
Vaping is completely banned in several popular holiday destinations, including Thailand, India, Singapore, Mexico, and Taiwan. In these countries, possessing a vape can lead to immediate confiscation, heavy fines, or even detention.
